Behind the Name: What is a Drayman?
Before the era of the motorized vehicle, delivery wagons called “drays” were driven by a worker known as drayman. Our historic building at 10 N 7th Ave was built to store freight coming off of the Walla Walla Valley Railway train that ran from Milton-Freewater, Oregon, into Walla Walla. The freight was carefully offloaded from the train and moved into storage within the building by draymen.
Though times have changed and the freight may be different, we honor the connection that runs from the historical draymen who walked our halls to our modern role of storing and protecting your wine collection. The Drayman House name was born out of this thread between the long history of the Walla Walla Valley and our passion for wine and community today.
In 2022, we acquired what was formerly known as the Inland Saxum Building on the Northwestern edge of downtown. The building underwent a full renovation to include climate controlled wine lockers, member lounge spaces, a conference room, sensory room and more, all while preserving and restoring as much of the original structure as possible.
