Walla Walla Valley Wine: World-Class Wineries and Tastings
The Walla Walla Valley Wine AVA (American Viticultural Area) has caught the attention and palates of wine lovers around the world, and for good reason: this 300,000 thousand acre haven is older than the states of Oregon and Washington and has a storied past. Beginning in the 1850s, this cross-state region has been home to the cultivation of wildly popular and exceptional wines.
On the Washington side of the region, Walla Walla wineries and tasting rooms bring visitors from around the world. With over 120 wineries in the region, the Walla Walla Valley Wine AVA is not only our home here at The Drayman House: it’s also a uniquely rich agricultural area.
About the Walla Walla Valley
The climate and geology of the Walla Walla Wine AVA may surprise those who think of Washington and Oregon as lush Pacifica, home to rainforests and towering mountains. On the eastern side of both states, however, the Columbia appellation stops rainfall and weather from the pacific coastline, leading to an arid high desert climate.
Situated at 46° N latitude–or right between the French Bordeaux and Burgundy regions–the area is known for its soil on a bedrock of volcanic Basalt. This fertile valley is famous for its other crops that feed the United States, such as onions, strawberries, wheat, and apples.
Walla Walla wine is as rich and diverse as the passionate people behind it. The region is celebrated for its world-class Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot, yet winemakers here are also experimenting with a wide range of unique and lesser-known varietals.
